What the $199 Covers, and Why the Term Matters
The full-term evaluation covers the entire 210-day certification period, which is the longest a Florida physician may issue under Fla. Stat. §381.986. It is not a shorter certification that sends you back for another paid visit in a few weeks.
That distinction is the one most price comparisons miss. A lower advertised visit price can cover a shorter period, so the cheaper first visit becomes the more expensive year. What matters is the cost per certification period, not the number on the first invoice.
Shorter options are available and start at $99. They cover about three months instead of the full 210 days and do not include a Request for Exemption (RFE). If this is your first card, the shorter option is usually the sensible start. It costs less to find out whether certification suits you at all, and the thing the full-term evaluation adds that the shorter one does not, the RFE, is something a first-time patient generally cannot use yet. The next section explains why.
How a Florida Request for Exemption (RFE) Works
An RFE is not a faster card or a premium service. Under Fla. Stat. §381.986(4)(f) it is a request your physician makes to the Department of Health for an exception to three specific caps: the daily dose amount limit, the 35-day supply limit for marijuana in a form for smoking, and the 4-ounce possession limit for marijuana in a form for smoking.
The statute requires the request to include, at a minimum:
- The qualified patient's qualifying medical condition.
- The dosage and route of administration that was insufficient to provide relief.
- A description of how the patient will benefit from an increased amount.
- The minimum daily dose that would be sufficient to treat the condition.
The Department must approve or disapprove within 14 days of receiving complete documentation, and the request is deemed approved if it does not act in that window.
Item 2 is why a first-time patient rarely has an RFE to file. It asks for a dose that has already been tried and already proved insufficient. A patient who has never been certified has no prior dose on record, so there is nothing to put in that field yet. An RFE is generally something that becomes relevant later, once a standard certification has been tried and documented as not enough.
That is worth knowing before paying for a full-term evaluation specifically to get an RFE included. For most patients, and for nearly all first-time patients, the RFE is not the deciding factor between the two options. Certification length is.
Transferring From Another Florida Clinic?
If you have been certified in Florida before, including on a card that has since expired, you are a transfer patient, and Miracle Leaf® will match a competitor's advertised price on a comparable service.
