Getting a Medical Marijuana Card in Florida
In order to get a medical marijuana card in Florida, there are specific steps that you must take.
Below is the step-by-step procedure for getting a Florida medical marijuana card:
Verify Eligibility
The first, and probably the most important part of the medical marijuana qualification process, is to verify as to whether or not your health condition is one of those listed by the Florida Department of Health. If your negative health condition is listed as treatable with medical marijuana, you may be a candidate for receiving treatment.
Schedule an Appointment with a Qualified Physician
There are specific medical marijuana doctors in Florida who have registered and been approved by the Florida Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU). Ana approved MMJ doctor will meet with you, review your medical history and determine whether or not you are eligible for medical marijuana treatment.
Receive a Medical Marijuana Recommendation
After an initial consultation and determination that medical cannabis will be advantageous to your condition, the MMJ doctor will provide a recommendation for medical marijuana treatment.
Application Submission
The medical marijuana doctor’s office will provide you with a hard copy application for you to complete to send in by mail or direct you with a procedure to apply online. The application process will require the following information from you:
- A copy of your Florida’s driver’s license or state identification card (a passport photo may be required if your ID is not issued by the state).
- Seasonal residents will be required to supply proof of residency. Two (2) documents will be necessary, including a deed, monthly mortgage statement, mortgage payment booklet or a residential rental or lease agreement.
- An Application Fee will be required. Currently in 2024, the MMJ card fee is $75.00.
Approval of Your MMJ Application
It typically takes between two (2) to three (3) weeks to receive approval.
Receipt of Your Medical Marijuana Card
Once you have been approved for a Florida MMJ card, you will receive an email confirmation with a temporary card. You will be able to use the temporary card until you received your physical card by mail.
Purchase Medical Marijuana
You will now have the ability to buy medical cannabis from any approved Florida Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC).
Revisit Your Florida MMJ Doctor
At least once every 210 days to maintain your MMJ card without interruption.
Florida Requirements for Medical Marijuana Renewal
Medical Marijuana Renewals are required each year. In order to renew your MMJ card in Florida, you will need to revisit an approved medical marijuana doctor.
