Understanding Florida Medical Marijuana Laws

Despite the legalization of medical marijuana passing in 2016, there’s still tons of misinformation floating around about the medicinal benefits of cannabis. As a holistic alternative to dangerous opioid medications, medical marijuana in West Miami is gaining traction among medical professional and patients alike. If you’re interested in trying medical cannabis to manage pain or other symptoms, understanding Florida medical marijuana laws is key.

Florida Medical Marijuana Laws Explained

Amendment 2 was approved in a general election in 2016, legalizing the use of medical marijuana in non-smoking forms. Prior to this approval, medical marijuana was available in Florida but limited to terminally ill patients with less than five years to live. The 2016 vote made medical marijuana more accessible to other patients including those with non-terminal cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy and seizure disorders, and certain mental health conditions. As of May 25, 2019, the ban on smoking medicinal cannabis was lifted under the belief that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Under Florida law, medical marijuana in West Miami is available to qualifying patients under the care of a registered medical cannabis doctor in Miami. Registered physicians may only provide three 70-day prescriptions per patient. If you have a medical marijuana card in Miami, you can legally possess up to 4 ounces of marijuana obtained from any state-licensed and regulated dispensary. Home cultivation of medical marijuana is prohibited.

Certified caregivers may obtain medical marijuana for a patient that has a prescription. However, the caregiver must be registered with the Department of Health and obtain the required identification. They may also be limited in the number of patients they may care for.
